As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (aka Mormon), I am sympathetic to everyone struggling to deal with this difficult issue. I know that this is such a hard topic for so many people.

I do want people to understand that the Mormon church has never preached, and nor should any of its members ever feel, any antagonism toward people with gay tendencies. Our belief is that marriage between a man and a woman is an essential part of God's plan for his children to be happy. That is why we feel that any other form of marriage is not right.

Obviously, there are many people who find our ideas on this topic incorrect and offensive, and they have a complete right to disagree. But I hope that they would make an effort to understand what we actually do believe, before labeling us as bigoted, polygamists, or as people full of hate. (Polygamy ended in 1890.) These labels are completely inaccurate for any true, practicing member of our church. You can visit the Newsroom at lds.org for a more in-depth explanation of what our church actually teaches on this topic.

In a respectful response to Chad, I don't understand why he would lable the Mormon church's history of polygamy "despicable", and then glorify gay marriage almost within the same sentance. There is room for disagreement on both issues, but why should one be automatically considered despicable and the other glorified?

This is a good discussion airing on 2 sides of this hot issue. Cassandra Handley held her own pretty well, with moments where her defenses are incongruent with her Mormom teachings (i.e. I'll go to your wedding but the 'Proclamation of the Family' needs to be upheld). Huh??
Sue Carswell came out really strong with her defense and direct with her facts as to why the LDS is experiencing this backlash. Micheal Hogan, the moderator, did well in pointing out the Mormon's despicable polygamous history.
Nice and all, I still believe that both the Mormon Church and the Catholic Church should pay the price of bigotry and hatred towards the gay community. Keep up the good fight!
