mattmccoyIowa officials have confirmed that Iowa State Senator Matt McCoy received a death threat by telephone on Monday. Iowa’s first and only gay lawmaker, McCoy has been a vocal supporter of the Iowa Supreme Court’s recent ruling on gay marriage, and the threat comes in the midst of protests for and against marriage equality at the state capital.

From the Des Moines Register:

Security was heavy at the Capitol again Monday as supporters of traditional marriage rallied outside the building, then came inside to lobby lawmakers. They want lawmakers to take steps against an April 3 Iowa Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in Iowa.

What an unfortunate situation that a State Senator like Matt McCoy would receive a death threat for simply standing up for justice and equality. I do not understand this act of hate and it boggles my mind why folks would resort to such acts just to strip another minority group of their freedom to marry. For the love of G*D, they don’t even know us!
It is a definite shame to see this happen both in CA and in America’s heartland, IA. I hope Sen. McCoy stays strong and I wish him ALL the best.

My message to Sen. McCoy – Sir, you are doing the right thing and fear not what these bigots are doing for they too are simply acting out of ignorance and fear. Please don’t let Iowa suffer the same fate as California.
