The following analysis by Charles Babington came across the AP wire while Obama’s speech (more from me on that tomorrow) was still in progress. Is this guy really watching the same speech? Or is this a partisan hack job courtesy of AP Washington Bureau Chief Ron Fournier, friend of Karl Rove and John McCain?
Barack Obama, whose campaign theme is “change we can believe in,” promised Thursday to “spell out exactly what that change would mean.”
But instead of dwelling on specifics, he laced the crowning speech of his long campaign with the type of rhetorical flourishes that Republicans mock and the attacks on John McCain that Democrats cheer. The country saw a candidate confident in his existing campaign formula: tie McCain tightly to President Bush, and remind voters why they are unhappy with the incumbent.
Of course, no candidate can outline every initiative in a 35-minute speech - especially one that also must inspire voters, acknowledge key friends, and toss in some autobiography for the newly-interested. And Obama did touch on nitty-gritty subjects, such as the capital gains tax and biofuel investments.
He said he would “find ways to safely harness nuclear power,” a somewhat more receptive phrase than he typically uses for that subject.
But most of his address echoed and amplified the theme that dominated the four-day Democratic nominating convention here: George Bush.

Every time I hear the words “Liberal Media,” I have put my hands over my ears to keep my head from exploding. I mean really… is it that liberal? I grant you the NY Times, Keith Oberman (MSNBC), and NPR to varying degrees… But CBS? Not after this clip… CNN? Don’t think so after letting wingnut Glenn Beck sub for Larry King, (interviewing Michael Savage no less).
And we hear nothing but whining from the McCain camp on the attention Obama has been receiving. Oh you mean like Revered Wright, William Ayers, and well you know that whole Muslim-not-a-muslim thing. While at the same time that “same” liberal media fawns over McCain like puppies looking for a treat.
A good friend of mine, who always has a lot of interesting things to say (and should frankly have a blog of his own), was kind of enough to share this with me this morning.
I usually hate painting with broad swathes of color. But this contemptible, steaming pile of excrement leaves me little choice. Listen to this audio clip of John Gibson on his Fox radio show which aired yesterday.
While not typically an advocate of violence, there’s nothing I’d like to do more than throw this SOB under the bus. And while we’re at it, let’s throw Bill O’Reilly, and Sean Hannity, and Anne Coulter, and Chris Wallace, and Bill Kristol under the bus too… Sure… I could go on… there’s an endless parade of hypocrites that deserve to be wedged between the tire treads, but frankly… we’d need a bigger bus.
And while not much of a fan of censorship.. I’d love to muzzle Fox News. Ban them from the airwaves. And throw Rupert Murdoch in jail (I might have to manufacture a charge, but Bill O’Reilly does that all the time. Perhaps I can ask him for help, no wait a minute… he’s still under the bus). And gleefully I will watch the hypocrisy dissipate from the airwaves as Fox News fades into a distant memory.
Perhaps then, and only then… will those who call themselves viewers begin to think for themselves, and perhaps.. maybe.. stop voting against their best interests. And finally, awaken from that long dream where Ronald Reagan saved the world and made America great again. (Well I can wish.. can I?)
But perhaps it is me living in a dream. So please… let me wake up.
