California’s Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) announced today that they would investigate allegations that the LDS Church did not fully disclose non-monetary contributions to the Prop 8 Campaign.

Fred Karger of Californians Against Hate called for the investigation last week, writing a letter to the FPPC detailing many of the allegations, including:

Church organized phone banks from Utah and Idaho

Sending direct mail to voters

Transported people to California over several weekends

Used the LDS Press Office to send out multiple News Releases to promote their activities to nonmembers

Walked precincts

Ran a speakers bureau

Distributed thousands of lawn signs and other campaign material

Organized a “surge to election day”

Church leaders travel to California

Set up of very elaborate web sites

Produced at least 9 commercials and 4 other video broadcasts all in support of Prop 8

Conducted at least 2 satellite simulcasts over 5 Western states

These allegations are on top of the $22 million raised by Mormons in support of Prop 8, and according to Karger are in violation of the Political Reform Act.

While the LDS Church has not yet commented on the announcement, they have previously stated that they “fully complied with the reporting requirements of the California Political Reform Act” and that “any investigation would confirm the church’s full compliance with applicable law.”

Roman Porter, executive director of FPPC said today that an investigation doesn’t necessarily mean there was any wrongdoing, and asked everyone to “reserve judgement.”

Yes, as the First Dude, I think you are completely entitled to keep your sexy knickers, I mean silk boxers. I’m not sure from what fine establishment they were purchased but I doubt they’ll accept such a return. Just have Sarah round up the rest of the $150k in clothing and return them post-haste.

As for the sexy knickers, it’s a borrowed line from the classic TV show Are You Being Served. Enjoy.

As for Sara and Todd Palin… aren’t they just the gift that keep on giving? This much needed moment of levity, unfortunately, is now at an end.

While the Mormons have received the majority of press for their financial support of Proposition 8 (over $20 million), Catholics and the Catholic Church have also played a major role in its passage.

Announced August 12, 2008, Catholics for ProtectMarriage.com was established as the official Catholic grassroots effort dedicated to passing Proposition 8. It’s members include the Knights of Columbus (who donated over 1.4 million in support of Prop 8), the California Catholic Conference and Catholics for the Common Good.

Catholics for the Common Good (CCG) based in Daly City just outside of San Francisco, mobilized local Catholics through prayer, education, fundraising and volunteering to pass Proposition 8. Catholics also played a large role in the passage of Proposition 22 in 2000 which defined marriage as being between one man and one woman.

CCG is chaired by founder Bill (William) May, a professor of Moral Theology who also serves as a chair for Catholics for Protectmarriage.com. May has also appeared on various media outlets throughout the SF Bay area speaking against Proposition 8.

In an interview with the Catholic Voice in early September 2008, May said, “We’re asking people to volunteer to help in parishes, to participate in telephoning, talking with neighbors. This is a really important issue. Marriage is the foundation of the family. People are very upset that the Supreme Court overruled the will of the people.”

Also in September, May sent out a plea to Catholics urging them to make sacrifices and re-order priorities, recruit volunteers and acquire and distribute yard signs.

May appears in the television clips below.

In addition to supporting traditional over same-sex marriage, May also rejected adoption by same-sex couples in 2006, then performed by Catholic Charities of San Francisco. May cited an official Vatican document that stated “Allowing children to be adopted by persons living in such unions would actually mean doing violence to these children, in the sense that their condition of dependency would be used to place them in an environment that is not conducive to their full human development.” and are “Gravely immoral.”

May and the CCG are also enthusiastic supporters of Archbishop William Levada of San Francisco, who was accused by the Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests (SNAP) for protecting pedophile priests in the San Francisco Archdiocese, by refusing to post names of priests who were accused of sex abuse. Levada also opposed domestic partnerships in San Francisco back in 1997 as an attack on the sacrament of marriage. Levada now serves in Rome leading the Vatican’s investigation of hundreds of ordained clergymen suspended from public ministry amid allegations they had sexually abused children. May has also personally praised Levada for speaking out against gay marriage.

May spoke at length recently with in an interview with the Catholic Business Journal about Proposition 8, describing it as the most important vote in California history.

“At this point we are beyond tolerance and acceptance, and we are now facing compliance and obedience to a new standard of marriage, of the human person. People have been tolerant and accepting as a culture – but this law, this court decision, has changed the standard and created a new one… Catholics and others who understand the meaning and nature of marriage will be counter-cultural and seen as discriminatory or bigoted. It opens the way for lawsuits and challenges to tax exemption.

“The stakes are high. We are battling for the survival of the family as we know it, as God established it… Proposition 8, the Marriage Protection Act, is the most important thing that has ever been on the ballot in California history! People around the world are watching carefully.”

It’s clear now that the strong push by Catholics of ProtectMarriage.com and other Catholics groups were ultimately successful. In a field poll one week prior to the election, Catholics accounted for 24% of the electorate, voting 44% Yes on 8. Exit polls on election day showed Catholics accounting for 30% of the electorate and 64% voting Yes on 8, an increase of 20%.

Assuming the projections in the exit polls hold across the entire voting population, of the 10.3 million Californians who voted, approximate 3 million were Catholic, and nearly 2 million of those voted Yes on Proposition 8. That’s a 1 million voter difference in the final week prior to election day.

By comparison, in CNN exit polls African Americans accounted for 1 million of the Californian voting electorate, 70% voting Yes, or seven hundred thousand voters.

Many believe the high voter turnout of African Americans led to the passage of Proposition 8. What about the Catholics?

Fred Karger of Californian’s Against Hate issued a press release today announcing Mormon contributions now account for $22 million of all donations received in support of Proposition 8. Three million in the past week alone. And two million of that from the 8 major donors below:

Alan Ashton, Lindon, Utah – $1,000,000
Hartford Holdings, Provo, Utah – $300,000
David Moon, Alpine, Utah – $200,000
Michelle Adams Watterson, Cache, Utah – $100,000
Roger Bayer, Salt Lake City, Utah – $100,000
Katharine, Garff, Bountiful, Utah, – $100,000
Belinda Vandersloot, Idaho Falls, Idaho $100,000
The Vineyard Group (Cardon & Haitt Families), Mesa, Arizona $100,000

From Karger’s press release:

Now with the additional $3 million of late Mormon money contributed over the last 9 days added to the $19.15 million previously given by over 59,000 Mormon families, the new total is over $22 million. This makes Prop. 8 the largest Mormon political undertaking in the 178 year history of the Mormon Church.

The audacity of Mormons who have a long history of discrimination, and who are now investing so much time and money into stripping away our rights here in California, is truly astonishing. When the dust settles and Proposition 8 has either won or lost, their role in this election must be rigorously examined. We must determine whether or not any religious entity should be able exert so much influence and power in the political process, without consequences. Revoking their tax exemption status perhaps?

Again I ask, will we let them do this? Please vote No on 8.

Visit Californian’s Against Hate to view the entire release.

The No on Prop 8 campaign released the following statement:

“Today the NO on Prop 8 campaign’s Web site (http://www.noonprop8.com/) was the victim of what appears to be a coordinated attack designed to bring the system down. According to http://www.calitics.com/, the denial-of-service attack (DoS) on the NO on Prop 8 website occurred before 11:30pm, Wednesday, October 29th and coincides with a similar attack on Florida’s NO on 2 campaign, the Constitutional Amendment Against Marriage Equality. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in a denial-of-service (DoS) attack, an attacker attempts to prevent legitimate users from accessing information or services. By targeting a computer and its network connection, or the computers and network of the sites, an attacker may be able to prevent someone from accessing email, web sites, online accounts (banking, etc.), or other services that rely on the affected computer. The most common and obvious type of DoS attack occurs when an attacker ‘floods’ a network with information.”

When attempting to make a donation last night we noticed how how sluggish the No on Prop 8 website was, but attributed it to an increase intraffic due to donations and not anything sinister.

Sometimes the site still feels sluggish today. If you are unable to get through to make a donation, you can also donate through ActBlue or at Equality California. The No on Prop 8 campaign needs $3 million in donations by midnight Friday to counter the opposition’s recent surge in donations to purchase airtime for ads between now and election day. The campaign fears we may lose without this support.

While I am not surprised by the intellectual dishonesty of No on Prop 8′s opponents, I am a little surprised with the intellectual capability of it’s supporters to put together such an attack.

I guess hackers come in all stripes, even bigots.

Second to the presidency, Proposition 8 is arguably the most important vote in the nation this November. Authored by religious groups, Proposition 8 overturns the California Supreme Court’s decision granting same-sex couples marriage equality, and amends the state constitution so that marriage can only be defined as union between a man and a woman.

Recently married, my partner and I have donated time and money to the No On Prop 8 campaign. We’ve called upon our family and friends to do as much as they can. We’ve distributed fliers and signs around our neighborhood, and have tried to make an impact in our workplace. But we wanted to do something more.

I’ve made a No On Prop 8 video and have posted it on online. I’m not so naive as to think it will make a huge difference, or even a small one, but if I can get one more person to donate time or money, or get down off of that fence, then it will have been worth it.

I think many California voters don’t really know who Proposition 8′s biggest supporters are, or their core values. In the video I try to draw attention to that, in the hopes that making the decision to vote No on Prop 8 is an easier one.
Please help me spread the word by sharing this video.

Some of Proposition 8′s biggest supporters include
(I will not link to them as not to send them traffic):

Concerned Women for America

Focus on the Family

American Family Association

The Knights of Columbus

Members of the Mormon Church
(urged by their leaders, they have donated over $18 million)

For a complete list visit Californians Against Hate or the LA Times.

Please donate time or donate money if you have not already done so. Or volunteer for No On Prop 8′s Election Visibility program on Election Day November 4th.

And finally, I’d like to send my deepest thanks to Chuck Smith, who was so gracious with his time to provide the voiceover in this video. Please contact me if you have some work to send Chuck’s way.

Apple came out strong against Prop 8 today in the shape of $100,000 donation.

Apple is publicly opposing Proposition 8 and making a donation of $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign. Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights — including the right to marry — should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8.

I’ve long been a member of the Apple faithful, having convinced many to switch to Mac over the years — Apple, where’s my cut!? But after today, all debts are forgiven. I’m really proud of them and the announcement is well timed. Evidently Apple couldn’t care less about Protect Marriage’s blackmail campaign against businesses supporting marriage equality.

Out of curiosity I’ve been following a lot of the forums on Apple friendly sites to gauge the reactions. It’s run generally positive, running the gammut from “I’m going to the Apple store tonight and spending a lot of money in thanks” to “I just bought a new Macbook and I’m returning it tonight. I can’t support a company that supports immorality.” Bigots, please feel free to return your Apple products, it’ll leave cheaper refurbished products for the rest of us.

I’m going home to kiss my Mac now. You do the same.

Yesterday I posted a story about a family in San Jose who donated $30,000 — correction, over $60,000 total — to support Yes on Proposition 8. I hesitate to make this a daily Mormon rant, but here goes.

Fred Kager, who runs the Californians Against Hate website which provides a detailed (and publicly available) list of contributers who support Proposition 8, revealed today that Mormons have donated a staggering 18.6 million to deny same-sex couples the right to marry. That’s 77% of all total documented donations. Mormons also account for 88% of all individual money raised.

Mormons, instructed by their leaders in Salt Lake City Utah, are leading the charge to take away the rights of same-sex couples, both here in California and Arizona.

How do we fight this? How do we shed light on this, without looking religiously intolerant? At this point, do I really f*@cking care?

It also astounds me that the campaign to defeat Proposition 8 only has only amassed 30,000 donors out of an estimated 1 million LGBT Californians. And many of them are our straight allies.

Is marriage just not that important to our community? Don’t they realize that if we let them strip away this one right, it gives them license to strip away all the rights we’ve worked so hard for and now enjoy? (at least here in California)

I’m angry with the Mormon church for muscling their way into California politics in an attempt to steal away our rights and invalidate my marriage to my partner of 8 years. And I am angry with the members of my community, who won’t stand up to them.

Everyone needs to donate time, or donate money today. Put down the cosmopolitan. Skip the gym at least for a day. Reschedule that facial (lord knows I’ve done all of these things). And please make a difference.

Getting married may not matter to you now my LGBT friends, but trust me, it will.

The Sundstroms are Mormon. At the behest of their leaders in Utah, Mormons here and throughout the country are working hard to pass Proposition 8, donating nearly 10 million so far. Many going as far as taking a second mortgage out on their homes or withdrawing their savings to fund their cause.

And the Sundstroms donated $30,000 to Yes on Prop 8. Yesterday.
